While the choices in full-size half-ton pickups aren’t nearly as varied as with family sedans or SUVs, there’s still a pretty good selection from which to choose. Nonetheless, the 2014 Ford F-150 continues to be the best-selling truck of them all, year after year. That’s not because its rivals are weak; rather, it’s because Fordcontinues to offer customers so many of the features important to them, in a package that’s handsome, rugged and reliable.
From features and fuel economy to towing and hauling, the F-150 has it covered. Depending on the model, you can have everything from a basic work truck to a luxurious country limousine. The F-150 is the first full-size pickup to offer a turbocharged V6 engine and an electronic locking rear axle. It also has several clever little features such as a built-in step inside the bed door and Hill Start Assist, which prevents the truck from rolling backward when stopped on a steep angle.

The F-series dates back to 1966. In 2014, it gets a complete makeover, including plenty of new tech. Rather than just cameras for backing up, the new truck has four, providing a full bird’s-eye, 360-degree view. Drivers can now see exactly what’s around them on all sides, which should make navigating around cramped job sites (or Walmart parking lots) a fair bit easier. The front camera can also be triggered when pulling out from intersections, providing a much safer view of oncoming traffic.
The new truck makes extensive use of LED lighting, including optional LED headlights. Lights are also built into the mirrors that shine out and down, lighting up the ground around the doors, and lighting in the bed has also been augmented. There’s a remote tailgate release, dampened by hydraulic pistons, and a 400-watt, three-prong outlet situated right on the dashboard. It’s intended for charging tools, but we can’t help imagining the joys of topping up MacBooks while road-tripping. When off the road, an integrated gyro displays roll and pitch on the 8-inch dash-mounted LCD.

US News’ Rankings and Reviews
Although its key rivals have been redesigned more recently, reviewers say that powerful engines and many trim level choices make the 2014 Ford F-150 a compelling full-size truck.
The Ford F-150 comes standard with a V6 engine that reviewers write makes adequate power. For anyone planning on doing substantial towing or hauling, most reviewers recommend stepping up to one of the two optional V8s or the optional turbocharged EcoBoost V6. An automatic transmission is standard, and test drivers say that it shifts smoothly. Fuel economy is an EPA-estimated 17/23 mpg city/highway with two-wheel drive and the base V6, 16/22 mpg with the EcoBoost V6 and 13/18 mpg with the largest V8. Some reviewers say the F-150 rides and handles fairly well for the class, though others write that it doesn’t ride quite as comfortably as the Ram 1500. The F-150’s steering is praised for offering good feedback to the driver, and reviewers note that the brakes have plenty of stopping power. Ford offers an off-road-oriented variant called the SVT Raptor, and test drivers report that this truck has tremendous off-road capability.

The 2014 Ford F-150 is offered in a substantial array of trims and powertrains to accommodate all manner of towing, hauling or off-road needs. Although it’s not the freshest full-size truck out there, it remains a must-drive for shoppers.
When you’re shopping for a full-size pickup truck, you quickly realize how evenly matched the players are: Cab styles, engines and towing capacities are all pretty similar across the board. Yet the sheer variety within the Ford F-150 lineup has always set this truck apart from its rivals. You can choose a stripped-down work truck, lather on the luxury with plush versions like the King Ranch, or equip your 2014 F-150 as a serious off-roader via the specialized SVT Raptor model. Whatever your tastes, you’re almost certain to find a 2014 Ford F-150 that meets your needs.
The customization starts in the engine bay of the Ford F-150, which has four available power plants, ranging from a base V6 to a 6.2-liter V8. All are worthwhile choices, but the most compelling option is the midrange EcoBoost 3.5-liter V6 engine: It makes as much torque as most V8 engines and provides equivalent towing capacity. And if you drive your truck every day, you’ll be happy to know this is also the most fuel-efficient of the available F-150 engines.
